A month or so ago, a Facebook acquaintance asked me for the word that means someone who likes to read. Who else would he go to but the person who posts relentlessly about books and reading? Of course, bibliophile was the first word I thought of. I knew that wasn’t the word he wanted, but I didn’t recall a word specifically for the love of reading. The now ubiquitous librocubicularist flashed into my mind. It means a person who reads in bed but still wasn’t the right word. A brief internet search yielded the popular bookworm, but nothing more. Surely there was a better, more concise word out there. I, oddly enough, hadn’t heard of it.
Fortunately, the acquaintance remembered. It’s bibliophage. A person who loves to read. An ardent reader. A sophisticated alternative to bookworm. Me. Unabashedly.
I love reading. It’s my first passion. I also love books but developed this passion later in life. I’ll share more about both in this blog.
